yea, I still like this title. Completely feels a bit out of date and tone deaf, but maybe that’s the point. I don’t know. I love to talk about race, its a fascinating topic, that we don’t as a country talk about enough. Its always so negative first, and while there are problems, to be sure, there are a lot of great things happening. We seem to want to belittle ourselves and not take credit for the advances we have made. Keep moving forward.
Small example, I was in a conference call with another group. Everyone in the room with me was white. Everyone on the video conference was black – (or vice versa depending on where you were sitting). So I blurted out, “Hey, we’re an open faced Oreo cookie”. To which everyone in the ‘white room’ cringed and looked horrified and everyone on screen, in the ‘black room’ laughed and continue to this day to call me Oreo. After the meeting, people came up to me and said they found the joke offensive.
So the next day I brought in a box of Oreos for every person that was in the meeting and I took one of the cookie sides off (that took awhile). Worth it, even if a stupid thing to do and gave me a trip to HR, I mean…come on.
